CURRENT STATUS



There are nine participating units of government who will provide for the governance of the trail thru the creation of a Recreational District that can receive funds and provide for the administration, operation and maintenance by an appointed District Board. Each unit of government appoints one member.

Participating Units of Government:

County Board of Supervisors: Union, Pontotoc, Chickasaw

Cities: New Albany, Ecru, Pontotoc, Algoma, Houlka, Houston

The nine participating units of government have formally signed the required supporting resolutions to create and fund the Recreational District that will administer the operation and maintenance of the trail.

Application for the pertinent grants to acquire the right-of-way and provide the 80% matching trail construction grant have been filed with MDOT.
Request to place the right-of-way corridor into "rail banked" status has been filed and under negotiation.

Three Rivers Planning and Development District has been requested to serve as the Fiscal Management agent for the Recreational District and will assist with the start up of the District organization after which the Board members of the Recreational District will be appointed.

MDOT plans to announce the grant awards selection by late September.
